Night in the Woods is by far my favorite game of all time. It was an incredibly introspective experience for me. I think the reason it affected me so much was because it was just normal interactions between people, so it felt real. That made everything so much more emotional because I could really see it happening. It broke the barrier of "This is just a story." and I truly felt like I was witnessing Mae's life unfold. The only thing I didn't like about the game was how slow the pace was. However, after finished the game entirely I realize it's more of a visual novel, than a game.
Oxenfree is another very fun visual novel style game. However, it is definitely more of a game than a visual novel. The gameplay isn't that of a traditional game- It's a mostly walking and dialogue, with some puzzle solving sprinkled in. The story is moving and there are many twists that keep you hooked. The game is also fully voice acted, which allows the characters to be more expressive.
